At the time of the Quran’s revelation, the angel Gabriel recited it to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who, in turn, recited it back in one dialect. Upon the Prophet’s request, the angel increased the dialects until reaching seven. These variations maintained the same meaning but featured changes in pronunciation. This process is supported by various hadiths, emphasizing the flexibility of recitation in seven different ahruf.
1) Ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Jibreel recited the Qur’aan to me in one harf, and I recited it back to him, but I requested him to increase (the number of harf) and he continued to increase it for me until we stopped at seven ahruf.”
2) ‘Ubay ibn Ka’ab reported that the Prophet (PBUH) was commanded to recite the Qur’an to the people in seven ahruf, allowing flexibility in recitation.
Within Qira’at, there are two categories: Mutawatir (transmission with wide consensus) and Mashhur (transmission slightly less widespread). The seven Mutawatir Qira’at include prominent readers like Nafi’, Ibn Kathir, and Hamza. Additionally, there are three Mashhur Qira’at, including Abu Ja’far and Khalaf.
